Types of Pest Control
For those who have just moved into their first home or those who have little experience with annual pest control, the number of options to eliminate unwanted pests can be a little overwhelming. From biological pest control to space fumigation, the methods available are numerous.
Biological pest control involves the control and management of natural predators and parasites. The main objective when using this method of pest control is to eliminate a pest with minimal harm to the ecological balance of the environment in its present form. For example, mosquitoes are often controlled by Bacillus thuringiensis (most commonly known as Bt), a bacterium that infects and kills mosquito larvae in local water sources. Proper waste management and drainage of still water is a similar option that involves the elimination of breeding grounds and can prevent many insects from invading an area.
Poisoned bait is a very common practice for controlling rat populations. This method is not as effective when other food sources are around (such as garbage), but is generally effective for killing fruit flies, snails, slugs, and other invasive pests.
Traps are commonly used to kill off mice found in houses and for capturing nocturnal creatures such as raccoons and opossums.
Poison Spray is the most customary method of eliminating unwanted pests, which is dispersed by planes, trucks, or hand-held units. This technique works to kill multiple types of pests. One inconvenient option is space fumigation, which involves a structure to be covered or sealed airtight, followed by the introduction of a penetrating deadly gas at a killing concentration for a long period of time, typically 24-72 hours. A similar technique that is much less expensive is space treatment, and involves fogging and misting-type applicators dispersing liquid insecticide in the atmosphere. These applicators can be found in grocery stores fairly cheap.
Repellents, another fairly commonly used method, repel common pests. For example, Balsam fir oil from Abies balsamea, is an EPA approved non-toxic rodent repellent. Acacia polyacantha root emits chemical compounds that repel animals such as crocodiles, snakes, and rats.
