Chinch bugs are annoying pests the live and thrive throughout the United States. In Florida, we know them all too well—it is difficult to find a lawn that hasn’t yet been affected by these bugs, especially in the summertime.

As winter turns to spring and the weather becomes warmer, chinch bugs move into open areas, where females begin to lay their eggs. These eggs can hatch in as little as one week! It will take anywhere between 30 and 90 days for these hatchlings to reach adulthood, but once they do, they can cause detrimental effects to your Central Florida lawn and landscape.

The damage is done once the chinch bug inserts its straw-like mouthparts into the grass tissue to drain the plant of its nutrients. The area around the feeding puncture usually turns yellow. Damaged areas usually first appear as small patches which enlarge as the chinch bugs begin to spread. Open, sunny areas are often the most impacted by these pests.

If you find areas of dead grass and suspect that you may have chinch bugs, try spreading the grass gently with your fingers and observing the soil surface. During the summer, you will usually be able to see them crawling.

If you have found chinch bugs in your Orlando lawn, it is crucial to begin treatment as soon as possible. In some instances, watering your lawn to counteract the effects of the bug will work, but not always. If you have tried this method with no avail, you will need a chemical lawn treatment.
