Top 3 Summer Lawn Care Tips

Monday, June 17th, 2013

As the days grow longer and the sun begins to shine, you likely already realize that summer is finally here. With warm weather comes more pests, and you’ll likely be paying a bit more attention to your lawn during the hot sunny months. Whether or not you’ve been keeping up with lawn care and maintenance, there are still a few tips that can make your lawn look its best all summer long.

Watering Your Lawn

You’d be surprised how many people don’t properly water their lawn, which can be detrimental to its health. A well-maintained lawn needs about an inch of water every week to stay healthy, and prevent disease development. Watering your lawn infrequently with a deep soak that reaches the roots is much more beneficial than watering your lawn more frequently with water that barely penetrates the surface. You also don’t want to over-water, or you could end up creating conditions in which fungus can grow, and weeds can spread.

Mowing Your Grass

Believe it or not, mowing has a significant impact on the health and growth of your grass. When mowing your yard, the blade of the mower should be set fairly high under stressful conditions. A longer lawn will have more surface area for photosynthesis to occur, which results in more plant growth, a more extensive root system and a healthier lawn. Higher cuts can also dramatically reduce weeds once the grass fills in, crowding them out and retaking the turf. Weeds normally invade lawns when the turf is weak or stressed.

Pest Control Maintenance

Keep a close eye out for chew marks on the grass blades; this could indicate a pest problem that could get worse by making your lawn thin, weak and discolored. It may be more difficult to control without having a proper pest control company inspect and treat your lawn. Pests like chinch bugs kill grass by sucking the sap out of it and injecting a toxic saliva, which can cause yellowing halos of dying grass.

Pro Staff Termite and Pest Control is here to help you with yearly pest prevention and can inspect your home for free if you suspect you might have pests. Our lawn care professionals can also regularly maintain your lawn to ensure your lawn is continuing active growth and color and is remaining free from insect and disease problems. Your Spring Lawn Care Tips

Wednesday, January 9th, 2013

Spring will be quickly approaching, and in Florida it already seems like it’s here. It’s that time to make your lawn the greenest, healthiest lawn on the block. Spring is the ideal time to get your lawn ready for the warmer months so it becomes one less thing to worry about when you least expect it throughout the year. Your Orlando lawn care and pest control company helps you get the most out of your lawn by providing fertilizer and weed control products to help maintain your lawn, but here are a few other tips to keep in mind to manage your spring green up and to prepare for future months.

Mowing your lawn: Don’t mow your lawn too short, or it could encourage weed growth because the leaf blades lose their nutrients. Avoid putting your lawn mower blades to the lowest setting so you won’t have to put in the extra, unnecessary effort of pulling weeds.

Resod or plug bare spots: If you have bare spots on your lawn, Pro-Staff can refer an Orlando landscaping company to resod or plug your lawn.  In addition, the new sod needs to be watered every day for the first week to 10 days.

Pest control: Fight insects with an Orlando lawn care company. They can apply product to your lawn that prevents pests from infesting and killing your lawn, and that protects your lawn against disease.

Raking: Although you might think that raking is done through the fall months, you will want to make sure you rake through the winter and spring season and before you begin treatments on your lawn. Fallen leaves provide the perfect home for pests, and can kill your lawn if your grass isn’t receiving proper nutrients.

Fertilization: Another task that your Orlando lawn care and pest control company can help you with is fertilizing your lawn for the Spring. Not only does it provide your lawn with special nutrients for optimal growth, but it helps your lawn keep its color and it encourages the growth of other plants.

When planning your lawn care treatments, call Pro-Staff Termite and Pest Control and have us create an Orlando lawn care maintenance schedule specifically tailored to your lawn. Get your free estimate and free inspection by contacting us today at 407-292-7378.

New Year’s Lawn Care Resolutions

Tuesday, January 8th, 2013

The New Year is finally here. Did you make any new year’s resolutions for your lawn? If not, then you should! Keeping your lawn properly maintained can help prevent pests and can keep your lawn healthy and beautiful. Start the new year right by deciding how you can improve your lawn with help from your most trusted Orlando pest control company.

Get your lawn inspected by your Orlando pest control company. You can start a yearly lawn maintenance program that helps keep your lawn healthy and pest free year around. Special fertilizers can be applied to help enhance root growth and color.

Apply weed control to help prevent future weed problems. Weeds can make your lawn look unkempt, and you probably don’t want to add “pulling weeds” to your list of chores if you don’t have to.

Have dead and diseased trees removed. Dead and diseased trees provide a haven for wood-boring insects because it provides them with food. You don’t want to risk having termites, carpenter ants, and other insects migrate into your home and begin feasting on your foundation.

Water your lawn deeply so that the water reaches the roots. Shallow watering can make your lawn more susceptible to disease, and requires you to water more frequently. Deep watering only needs to be done around once a week.

If you’re looking for more ways to encourage a green, healthy lawn, our pest control and lawn care experts at Pro-Staff Termite and Pest Control can create a lawn treatment schedule just for you. Call us at 407-292-7378 to schedule your free inspection with our Orlando pest control company and to get started on the right foot this New Year!

Why Lawn Care Services are Important For Maintaining Your Lawn

Tuesday, December 18th, 2012

Fertilizing your lawn is one of the most essential ways to maintain a healthy, green lawn and to keep it free from pests. It’s more than keeping your lawn green; it’s about giving your lawn the adequate amount of nutrients to ensure your lawn is continuing active growth and color, and is kept free from pests and diseases. Orlando lawn care services can help keep your lawn in its best shape and should be maintained on a regular basis.

Lawns that aren’t properly or continually maintained may have inadequate root systems which leaves them more susceptible to damage from harsh, cold winters and droughts. Fertilizer can help increase the efficiency of water so your lawn can grow in more lush and green, and it gives your lawn nutrients that it may not be getting enough of.

Proper lawn care services provide the right amount of fertilizer to keep your lawn green. But fertilizer does more than keep your lawn green; it can also keep weeds from growing and provide more opportunity for healthier grass to grow. It also jump starts a healthier lawn when Springtime rolls around

Unmaintained lawns are often more susceptible to diseases and pests which can lead to a ruined lawn. Orlando lawn care services provide your lawn with the fighting power it deserves to avoid dying, yellow and brown grass.

Maintaining your lawn doesn’t have to be an added hassle. Pro-Staff Termite and Pest Control offers Orlando lawn care services to help keep your lawn green, healthy and lush. Call us about our pest and lawn care services today at 407-292-7378 to learn how our services can help you.

Maintaining Your Lawn During the Winter Months

Friday, November 9th, 2012

The cold is already setting in for the incoming winter, and ensuring that your lawn is prepared can save you hassle when springtime rolls around. Orlando lawn care services provides you with a treatment for your lawn to enhance root growth and winter color, but there are also ways for you to make sure that your lawn stays healthy, even in the cold months. If you have any specific questions or concerns about your lawn during winter, you can always ask your pest control Orlando specialists.

As temperatures begin to drop, lawn growth slows down and the grass essentially begins to hibernate, and there are some tasks that should be done to make sure your lawn makes a strong recovery. Before the weather starts getting colder, mow your lawn short to help the grass maintain its nutrients and to help get the most out of fertilizer.

Pest control and lawn care services often lay down winter fertilizer, and it will work best when your lawn is shorter.

If your lawn is covered in fall leaves, you will want to rake them up and make sure that you don’t leave a layer of leaves on your grass. A layer of leaves on your grass can prevent the grass from receiving much needed nutrients to keep your lawn healthy and to make spring green-up easier. Without sunlight and the ability to breathe, your lawn can become suffocated and essentially kill it.

A lawn covered in leaves also provides a perfect home for insects and pests. It can provide pests with food and shelter, and it can give insects a better chance to invade your home. Mold can also develop underneath the leaves, which can be detrimental to your lawn, so it’s best to rake leaves as soon as possible!

Before the winter cold sets in, call your Orlando pest control company to ensure that your lawn stays healthy, even in December. Pro-Staff Termite and Pest Control will inspect your lawn for insects and apply fertilizer to help enhance root growth and winter color. Call us today at 407-292-7378 to learn more about our Orlando lawn care services!

Orlando Lawn Treatment: Fall Fertilization of Your Lawn

Friday, August 31st, 2012

Fall is quickly coming up, and is one of the most important times of the year for Orlando lawn treatment and lawn fertilization. The transition from fall to winter is a crucial point in which your lawn needs to be fertilized. During the months of August and September, rejuvenating your lawn from summer stress will make sure your lawn won’t suffer during and after the winter season.

But why is it so necessary to fertilize your lawn in the first place? Fall months require special fertilizer that should be applied in early fall to enhance root growth and color and recover from summer stresses that may include heat, drought, and disease. Even if the grass isn’t in need of food, proper lawn fertilization can help store carbohydrates that can help the grass resist stresses during winter. Late fall fertilization will also help provide your grass with the needed nutrients to help quicken spring green up while keeping increasing roots and helping better its color during the winter. During the months of December or January, many lawns, especially in Florida, will see continually active growth, which is another reason in which fall treatments promote winter survivability.

Providing treatment and protection for your winter lawn can also help fight disease and even insects. Having around the year treatment significantly helps your lawn from season-to-season rather than having only fall treatments or only spring treatments. It’s best to have a complete lawn care fertilization treatment schedule for the best results provided by a pest control Orlando company.

At Pro-Staff Termite and Pest Control, we provide the best results in Orlando lawn treatment. We strive to make sure your lawn is properly maintained and healthy and our treatment schedule is tailored to keep your lawn in shape throughout the year. Call us at 407-331-7378 to start scheduling your around the year lawn treatments for pests.

What are Web Worms and How Can They Affect My Landscape?

Thursday, July 26th, 2012

Web worms can be a nuisance for both you and your trees, and if left untreated, your trees could be made more susceptible to drought, disease, or other pests. During the year, there can be between one and four generations of web worms that could strike your landscape, potentially reducing the production of leaves, branches, fruits and nuts.

The fall web worm appears from late summer to early fall, typically disturbing almost 90 species of deciduous trees, and attacking many fruit and nut trees. This pest, if left untreated, can also heavily damage pecan production areas.

The insect overwinters (lives during the winter) as a pupa, while adults first appear in mid-June and throughout the summer. As a web worm grows, it enlarges its web by surrounding more of the foliage around it with web, which can contain caterpillars, partially eaten leaves, and even fecal droppings. Web worms typically construct their nests over the ends of tree branches, rather than closer to the trunk of the tree or in a crevice. Web worms can often cover entire branches of trees, leaving behind unsightly webs.

Natural enemies of the web worm typically help manage this pest, although you can help reduce its population by pruning the branches of the infested tree if the webs haven’t already become too large. However, be careful because pruning too many branches may affect the shape of the tree.

Although the immediate damage is insignificant, if enough generations of web worms attack and de-foliate trees, they can damage your Orlando lawn and landscape. Let our Orlando Pest Control Company get rid of the webs and web worms in your yard so that you don’t have to worry about the possibility of these pests returning. If you’re looking for a pest control company to get rid of pests on your property, contact us at 407-292-7378 in Orange County and 407-331-7378 in Seminole County.

Carpenter Ants: A Common Florida Pest

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012

We are all likely familiar with the damage that termites can cause to our homes, but termites are not the only type of pest that can put holes in your house.  Carpenter ants are large ants that like to nest in wooden structures and Florida even has its own special species of carpenter ant, aptly named The Florida Carpenter Ant.  This type is usually referred to as the red and black carpenter ant.  So what makes carpenter ants one of the most common types of indoor pests in Florida?

Although they do not cause as much damage as termites, if a carpenter ant nest is left untreated and gets large enough, the damage can be substantial.  Carpenter ants are considered wood destroying pests.  Unlike termites that actually eat the wood, carpenter ants are simply excavating the wood in order to construct nests.  Essentially, they damage your home to build their own.

Carpenter ants thrive in a damp environment.  Therefore, they will only target wood that has already been damaged by moisture.  This makes attics and floorings particularly attractive for carpenter ants.  In a way, carpenter ants help point out problems that probably already existed before they began to excavate.  However, if the carpenter ant nest is not taken care of, it can end up doing more damage to the wood than the moisture would have done alone.

Some common signs of carpenter ant infestation include trails of the ants and frass.  When carpenter ants begin making their nest, they toss out the debris within (which consists of wood chips, insect parts, etc.) and form small piles, referred to as frass.  Another way to discover carpenter ants is to listen for tapping sounds.  You can sometimes hear the ants rustling as they excavate wood.

Calling a pest control professional to take care of any carpenter ant infestation is the best way to ensure it is properly handled.  Carpenter ants are only repelled by most chemical sprays.  Improper application can lead to the nest moving locations, which compounds the problem.  If you suspect carpenter ants in your home, call Pro-Staff Pest Control at 407-292-7378, or fill out our free evaluation form.

Chinch Bugs: The Green Lawn Killer

Tuesday, June 19th, 2012

Chinch bugs are annoying pests the live and thrive throughout the United States. In Florida, we know them all too well—it is difficult to find a lawn that hasn’t yet been affected by these bugs, especially in the summertime.

As winter turns to spring and the weather becomes warmer, chinch bugs move into open areas, where females begin to lay their eggs. These eggs can hatch in as little as one week! It will take anywhere between 30 and 90 days for these hatchlings to reach adulthood, but once they do, they can cause detrimental effects to your Central Florida lawn and landscape.

The damage is done once the chinch bug inserts its straw-like mouthparts into the grass tissue to drain the plant of its nutrients. The area around the feeding puncture usually turns yellow. Damaged areas usually first appear as small patches which enlarge as the chinch bugs begin to spread. Open, sunny areas are often the most impacted by these pests.

If you find areas of dead grass and suspect that you may have chinch bugs, try spreading the grass gently with your fingers and observing the soil surface. During the summer, you will usually be able to see them crawling.

If you have found chinch bugs in your Orlando lawn, it is crucial to begin treatment as soon as possible. In some instances, watering your lawn to counteract the effects of the bug will work, but not always. If you have tried this method with no avail, you will need a chemical lawn treatment.

At Pro-Staff Pest Control, we are thoroughly experienced in treating and controlling chinch bug infestations. To learn more about our Central Florida lawn care services, fill out our free evaluation form or give our Orlando office a call today at (407)292-7378.

Orlando Lawn Care Schedule

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

Here at Pro-Staff Termite & Pest Control, we’re committed to keeping every inch of your Orlando lawn and landscape looking sharp and pest free. The two main ways we keep your lawn healthy is through lawn and ornamental liquid & dry fertilization, as well as insect, weed and disease control.

Knowing the grass that surrounds your home is very important in lawn care. St. Augustine grass thrives in tropical and subtropical regions, like Orlando. Therefore, we have a specific treatment schedule tailored to keep your St. Augustine grass healthy and green all year:

April & May: We inspect your lawn for insect and disease problems, as well as fertilize it to help maintain its color and improve turf vigor as summer heat approaches. We also apply a specially formulated fertilizer to maintain your lawn’s density and color.

June & July: Summer heat takes a toll on your lawn, so during this visit we inspect it for weed, insect, and disease problems. If excessive crabgrass is a problem, we’ll give you some control options to get it taken care of. Our specially formulated fertilizer is applied during this visit to maintain lawn density and color.

August & September: Early fall is the best time to revitalize your lawn as it recovers from that stressful summer heat. This visit concentrates on thickening the grass, promoting root growth, and turf color. We will also inspect for insects and provide treatment if necessary.

October & November: If there are any weed problems from the fall, we’ll take care of them. The fertilizer used during this visit promotes root growth and plant vigor to help your Orlando lawn survive the upcoming winter cold.

December & January: It is especially important for us to get a winter visit in because the cooler months of the year are harsh on your lawn. We inspect for insects and provide treatment if necessary. Lawns usually continue active growth during winter, so we also apply a special fertilizer to enhance root growth and winter color during this service visit.

February & March: The early spring visit helps your lawn recover from winter stress as well as helps promote green-up. The fertilization and weed control products we use during this time control existing winter seeds and thicken your lawn to handle any weed problems that may arise.

At Pro-Staff Pest Control, we are committed to providing the absolute highest quality lawn care services. If you are interested in learning how the team at Pro-Staff can transform your Orlando yard through our high-quality lawn care services, please give us a call today at our Seminole County office – (407)331-7378.
