Spiders in Your Home-What you Need to Know
Monday, October 17th, 2011Spiders span the world in all different shapes and sizes, but it is difficult for an average person to determine which ones are benign and which can strike without any warning. The most dangerous spiders we have to worry about here in Central Florida are going to be mostly Black Widows and Brown Recluses. These types of spiders are ghastly, sometimes hiding in unlikely places even while their webs are strewn throughout the front of your house or your garage. Though we at Pro-Staff Termite & Pest Control, Inc. deal with these critters on a regular basis, we don’t recommend anyone trying to take care of them alone.
Here is what you can expect from the spider bites of these two spiders:
Black Widow:
Symptoms: Includes pain, a burning sensation, eventually swelling and a reddish hue to the area of the bite. Could include fever, nausea, vomiting, headache, muscle/joint cramping, abdominal pain, and an overall feeling of malaise and discomfort.
Brown Recluse:
Symptoms: Immense redness around the area of the bite, followed by severe pain that occurs about 8 hours after the bite. Could include fever, nausea, vomiting, headache, muscle/joint cramping, abdominal pain, and an overall feeling of malaise and discomfort.
For both types of bites, immediate action has to be taken. First, wash the area thoroughly with soap and water. You’re going to want to prevent the spread of the venom immediately afterwards, and can start by elevating the area of the bite. Use something as a tourniquet above the area of the bite to further slow the spread of venom. It is important to deter the venom from traveling too far throughout the bloodstream without impairing the circulation of blood.
Immediately call emergency medical care once these steps have been performed. If you can, call the Poison Control Center as well so they can help determine the type of spider you encountered.
